On May 5, 2026, the Burundian Ministry of Education announced results of its new assessment and ranking of universities. Of the thirty-nine (39) institutions that were assessed, HAU ranked #2 (score of 90.5), topped only by the University of Ngozi (score 95.2), a private, Catholic college. The largest public university, the University of Burundi, ranked for many years as #1, fell to #5. HAU’s Rector, Servilian Nitunga, noted, “At the national level, HAU overscored the public universities in education quality. We topped every institution except the University of Ngozi who did very well in Medical School infrastructure compared to HAU. HAU has become a university of importance at the national level.”
Professor Anastasie Gasogo, President of Burundi’s National Commission for Higher Education, presented the results which she described as “based on a rigorous, participatory, and transparent process.” Intended as a benchmark of current institutional quality, the assessment showcased improvements since the 2018 assessment. The Ministry of Education hopes the assessment will also serve as a roadmap for addressing continuing challenges at institutions. These challenges include increasing qualified permanent staff/faculty, improving infrastructure and equipment, implementing stronger information systems for quality assurance, and overcoming weaknesses in scientific research.
